It is with sadness and emotion that we learned of the passing of Alain Bonfand.
Born in 1957, Alain Bonfand taught art history and theory at Beaux-Arts de Paris for over thirty years, from 1986 to 2017. He was appointed professor emeritus in 2022.
With a doctorate in history and a doctorate in philosophy, he directed research in aesthetics at Paris IV University (Sorbonne) and was a member of the “Concept and Language” doctoral school. He co-edited the Écrits d'artistes collection published by École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris from 1992 to 2010 with Jean de Loisy and then with Didier Semin.
Alain Bonfand has published numerous books and essays in the field of art and literary writing and has received several awards, including the Prix de l'Essai de l'Académie Française in 2012 for his entire body of work as an essayist.
An emblematic figure of the School, his teaching has had a lasting impact on generations of students.
