With a preface by Éric de Chassey and contributions from Hervé Bacquet, Pascal Dusapin, Renaud Ego, Pierre Juhasz, Daniel Kuntz, Jacinto Lageira, Serge Lemoine, Bernard Moninot, Catherine Millet, Jean-Luc Nancy, and Baldine Saint-Girons, the book offers a wealth of colour illustrations.

Retracing his entire artistic career, Le Fil d'alerte offers a unique and richly illustrated immersion into the visual and intellectual universe of Bernard Moninot, professor of drawing at Beaux-Arts de Paris from 2005 to 2015.

Born out of exchanges between the artist and students at the École des Arts de la Sorbonne, the book is an extension of a symposium organised at the Université Paris-1-Panthéon-Sorbonne by Hervé Bacquet, bringing together poets, artists, writers and philosophers around the work of Bernard Moninot. Its chapters provide a synthesis of the dialogues (interviews), detailing the intellectual foundations of his work, whose artistic approach can be likened to the methodology of a researcher. The book also provides a detailed biography and covers the successive series of his body of work.

Bernard Moninot student at École des Beaux-Arts from 1967 to 1974 in Lucien Couteau's studio, particularly enjoyed the perspective classes taught by Albert Flocon, a former student of Oskar Schlemmer at the Bauhaus and close friend of Gaston Bachelard. Bernard Moninot's parents had themselves been students at the school, where they had met.
Bernard Moninot began exhibiting his work even before completing his studies – at the Paris Biennale in 1971 and 1973, at the Lucien Durand Gallery in Paris, where his first solo exhibition was held in 1971, at the Musée d'Art et d'Industrie in Saint-Étienne, which devoted its first monographic exhibition to him in 1974, curated by Daniel Abadie and Bernard Ceysson, with a preface to the catalogue by Louis Aragon.
He taught art at the École Nationale Supérieure d'Art in Bourges, the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Angers, and the École des Beaux-Arts in Nantes before becoming a professor of drawing at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris (2005-2015). With François Bouillon and their students, he organised a Drawing Biennial at the Espace Ricard in 2013, and, with Gilgian Gelzer and Emmanuelle Brugerolles, at the Cité Internationale des Arts in 2015. At the Beaux-Arts, he mentored a whole generation of now-renowned artists who champion drawing as a practice in its own right.
