For Marc Couturier, ‘to draw is to dwell in grace. To draw is to reveal, to walk, to draw is to breathe, to survey lines, it is an exercise in humility and freedom’. Hervé Chandès, extract from the preface.
Born in 1946 in Mirbeau-sur-Bèze (Côte d'or), Marc Couturier lives and works in Paris.
In the early days of his artistic practice, he depicted boats filled with watercoloured blue water reflecting the sky, and created glass pieces evoking the Christian liturgy. Since 1991, he has been devoting his time to the Dessins du troisième jour (Third Day Drawings), produced in graphite in all formats, sometimes even screen-printed on canvas or presented as installations. These drawings evoke creation in Genesis: ‘It's always infinity on earth in a given space. Even if it's a landscape, it's not nature that's represented, it's creation.
He also creates Wall drawings and the Redressements series, as well as other sculptures using strips of stone or wood covered in gold leaf and stuck into walls.
Marc Couturier created the Cross in the choir of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris and the altar in the church of Saint-Denys du Saint-Sacrement in Paris.
This book brings together some 400 drawings from his Dessins du troisième jour series.
