After training in nuclear physics, Pierre de Mahéas worked as an engineer. At the same time, he trained as a sculptor.

This dual approach naturally led him to explore the relationship between the arts and sciences. He is now an artist, sculptor and teacher.

He is offering a workshop entitled Contre-Sens to Via Ferrata students.

‘In the formation of a scientific mind, the first obstacle is first experience, experience placed before and above criticism, which is necessarily an integral element of the scientific mind... the scientific mind must be formed against Nature, against what is within us and outside us...’ Gaston Bachelard, La formation de l'esprit scientifique.

Gaston Bachelard, La formation de l'esprit scientifique, re-edited, Vrin, Paris, 1980.

Our relationship with the world is partly conditioned by the sensory knowledge we have of it. Questions about our sensory experiences are at the origin of the first scientific models. (...)

The aim of this workshop is to use the defiance of our senses as a basis for artistic research.

The aim is to create objects, installations and performances that challenge our everyday sensory experience (for example, can we make gravity disappear, liquefy light, create a punctual noise, make metal edible, etc.) or develop systems that contradict our knowledge of physical phenomena (can we envisage the solidification of time, the evaporation of space, etc.) - all novel theories that can be presented in the form of your choice.
